It had some good moments, like Dietrch playing an ex-con plus the great shot of her famous legs.
You can get it on DVD from forgotten films biz.

The serious parts were fine but the comedy was overdone and cartoonish. The electric company workers all acted like idiots all the time. It was just too much and detracted from what could have been a much better movie if those scenes had been toned down about 90 percent.

Since George Raft's character never liked or respected Marlene Dietrich's character, I thought she should have hopped the bus at the end. He was no bargain!

By a strange coincidence I grabbed two movies without really looking at them before taking them home. Both had Edward G. Robinson as the lead. I watched Manpower and enjoyed it, then threw in 'Tiger Shark' (1932) and realized,
"They're the same movie!" Although there are subtle changes, one centers around electrical company workers the other is fishermen, the theme is the same and many of the scenes are darn near word-for-word matches.

This seems a lot like a remake of the Henry Fonda movie Slim.

I noticed that, too. Talk about recycling!
There are a few other classic movies that have recycled plots and lines. Warner's seems to have been particularly shameless.

You apparently weren't paying attention. As much as he couldn't stand her at first, Johnny comes to respect Fay. He sees how well she took care of Hank and how happy Hank is being married to her. Then, after Johnny's injured and Fay takes care of him, he comes to actually like her.

By the time Fay tells him how she feels about him, Johnny's starting to have feelings for her too. He's just not the kind to cuckold his friend. He loses all respect for her again after she's arrested. He thought she had gone back to her old ways. Upon finding out he's wrong, he makes sure she doesn't run out on Hank.

The reason Fay says she's leaving is to avoid seeing and being around Johnny so he decides to leave town himself. A sacrifice he's willing to make for his friend. Fay tells Hank she's fallen for Johnny but he misunderstands. Thinking Johnny instigated the relationship, he goes after him with murder in mind. Unfortunately by the time he realizes Johnny is really a pal and it's not what he thought, it's too late for Hank. With Hank dead, he can be and Fay can be together.

Apart from the tension of the eternal triangle, done really well, between the three principals, I think this movie depicts the niggling interplay between guys on a work gang very well. That is, not just the comedy, which I agree is far too witty and nonstop for real life -- but this is entertainment, something you don't get in today's movies unless it's a Jim Carrey movie or someone decapitating another guy or blowing him to smithereens. There are also the fights thrown in there at the drop of a hat, especially between Edward G and Ward Bond -- classic personality clash on a work gang when you can't get away from each other you're working so close and relying on each other in dangerous situations. The acting by Edward G as an obtuse oaf who knows nothing about women is rivetting as always. The love-hate between Marlene Dietrich and george Raft seems very realistic. And this is probably the best, most charismatic performance I've seen by George Raft.

Too much comedy! The horseplay goes on too long and too often. The film is lively at the end but did not maintain that level of interest throughout!

Pretty good. Things keep moving enough that it doesn't get boring. The three principals are all very good. I was surprised at the level of innuendo they got away with.
