Olivia de Havilland

I've loved Olivia in everything I've seen her in - she was so beautiful and a talented actress, but I must say I couldn't stand her character one bit in this movie! I absolutely hated her!! My daughter (7) watched this with me, and she was yelling at the screen for Henry Fonda's character to go & leave her then, and I was in agreement, lol!

I agree. I never cared for the role she played here as Ellen and I love her in just about everything. Even in HUSH..HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE where she plays such an evil character. Her bursts of temperament here and the way she talks to Fonda are just plain irritating.

I have to say that I agree with you...and I too love de Haviland in everything else I've seen her in. She has too intelligent a face to pull off being just an irritating little haus-frau. Still, the story is a wonderfully trenchant social commentary on "Americanism."
