I didn't understand the ending!

So, in reading the comments and reviews his luggage store is now a big success? He needs 50,000 to expand? So he wants his buddy to fall in front of a bus to scam the money? I thought he was sincere in wanting to go straight. So why, when he was accidentally hit by the car, he didn't take advantage of the situation, since this one was legit? Why did the police want to stop him from running? And why was he running from the police?

I was frustrated by this movie because he kept turning away his customers instead of nurturing his business when it was unexpectedly successful. It didn't make any sense.

they were out on "good behavior" from the judge, and although fate delivered them a legitimate "hit by a car" complaint, they weren't taking any chances with any more crimes.

a wonderfully comedic ending.

but he was just trying to talk his buddy into an insurance scam but this one was legit! And why were the police chasing them in the end?

I was under the impression the police wanted Pressure to hang around and get medical attention or file a report or something (and I think there appeared to be a little damage to the car that hit Pressure)...but since he and his buddies were suspiciously running away after the accident the police chased them.

I guess that makes sense.

I know, right? Once again, he or his associates are giving away merchandise or driving away customers and as another customer is running out the door I'm turning my head sideways and thinking, "THIS is a successful business??" We're not shown enough successful transactions to make it plausible, even with all those customers in the store during the advertised sales.

That said, I still laughed a lot and was very happy to see Jane Wyman and Jack Carson paired up again.

Pressure was trying to go straight but it's hard to build a business without any money. Ironically, he needed cash in order to go legit so he was resorting to his old illegal tactics to get it.

Getting hit by a car was one of their scams. They'd fake an injury in order to get money from the owner or driver of the vehicle. Pressure accidentally falls in front of a car so his buddies start playing their parts. Pressure, realizing it's a police car that ran into him, points that out to them so they all run away. The police are well aware of these scams so they would have arrested them for trying to defraud unsuspecting drivers. That's why Pressure and his guys run away and it's why the police run after them.

Of course it makes sense. The thing about criminals is they don't want to work. They think only chumps work for a living. This is what makes them idiots. They do work, all the time, even when they're not thieving and scheming. They have to constantly look over their shoulders to avoid getting caught.

Before realizing they could earn a good living in a legal enterprise, Pressure and his group plan to score big stealing from the bank. That would hold them over for a while. When it ran out, they'd plan another job and on and on.

Thanks. Good point about criminals not wanting to work and that they think only chumps work for a living. Explains a lot.
