Could this happen today? Could a doctor solely (wrongly) decide that such a drastic measure must be taken?

That Doctor was a Sadist. One of Charles Coburn's early roles, which He was always cast in as the Baddie, until later on in His career where He played lovable Grandfatherly types.
shareHe was never young in the movies. I believe he was 60 in his first movie. I've seen him in quite a few movies, but this is the only one I remember where he played a "baddie". He played Barbara Stanwyck's card sharp father in The Lady Eve, Jimmy Stewart's stuffy professor father in Vivacious Lady. He could have played other baddies, but I guess I remember him from comedies mostly.
