I did not understand this at all

I've read threads where there is suppose to be some kind of relationship between Parris and Drake because of when Parris visits Drake after his accidents and they hug. And then Randy goes out of the room praying. Is that just speculation on some people's part of their relationship.? And if they really did, is that when Randy knew? Just asking

... it was but later the script was changed.

"It's the system, Lara. People will be different after the Revolution."

Huh? I didn't see this at all. They were good, close childhood friends who hadn't seen each other in a long time. During that time, Drake experienced a catastrophic trauma. Of course they're going to enthusiastically hug.

Also, as for Randy, she believes Parris's return will be what brings Drake around. He's not only his friend, hopefully picking up Drake's spirits, but he has more understanding of Drake's mental state than she does. She's deeply grateful, which is why she prays.

I've seen this movie several times. Watching it right now and just noticed for the first times the homosexual overtones in the hug between Drake and Paris when Paris returns and goes to see Paris in bed after his legs have been removed. I was like WTF!! That lingering look RR gives w/his eyes roving over and drinking in every nuance of Paris' face then when they put cheek to cheek as if they're inhaling each others' essence I was just like WOOOOOWW how could I have missed this?!!

Thank you! I don't see it either! I agree with both of your comments 100%.

Back to the movie!

How sad, that you were not born in my time, nor I, in yours.

This.

That scene is so moving, and so full of love. It just happens not to be sexual love.

They are honest, kind people who have found themselves surrounded by slimy hypocrites, needing to cling to decent friends more and more as time goes on. They've been apart, they've suffered, and they still have a long way to go to be fully mature and healthy.

There are a lot of reasons for such strong emotion in that scene.

The interaction between Parris and Drake in that scene was not meant to be sexual... If it appears that way, it is likely due to the type of "overacting" common in movies at that time. It has been a while since I read the book, but this was not implied at all.

reply

If anyone thinks that scene has sexual undertones they are imagining it or wanting it to be so. I just watched the movie and it was nothing more than two very close, childhood friends who love each other like brothers. To travel across the ocean in 1900 (the timeframe of the story) was no easy feat. Parris did this out of devotion to his friend, to help him overcome a horrible calamity.

I whole-heartily agree with vdid!
People today will find whatever suits them and some like to just plain start crap for craps sake! Sadly nothing can be left as "innocent" as I'm sure this whole "scene" was - I personally never thought anything like above mentioned.

Fasten your seat belts. Its going to be a bumpy night!
