Timeline (spoiler)

When the Japanese gentleman mentions that he must return home before early December, it lets us know that the action is taking place before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Later, upon arrival at New York City, Robert Young mentions that the U.S. has only been in the war "for a few days".

So the bombing took place during their voyage to the U.S., right? It must be about Dec. 10.

The outrage and horror of Pearl seems to be absent from Robert Young's comment. It seems odd that a film of this era did not capitalize on that opportunity.

The character had seen peace give way to war, bombing and invasion in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, France and London. He had a mix of cynicism and acceptance of the inevitable.
