Alan Ladd's charisma

You can't take your eyes off Alan Ladd in this one. Such charisma and dazzling good looks, coupled with his beautiful voice. No wonder movie fans of the day wanted more from him.

Just saw this for 1st time today and was thinking exact same thing! His closeups dripped charisma.

He was already showing that he had what it took to be a star. Although he got his 'introducing Alan Ladd' credit later that year in 'This Gun For Hire' (also co-starring Laird Cregar), he has a decently substantial role here.

I actually found him AWFUL in his little bit part even though I like him in many of his starring roles. He clearly was trying to get noticed even though it was woefully inappropriate for his tiny part to be smiling so (he reminded me of someone who just had major teeth work done who deliberately goes around with an exaggerated smile to show off the new pearly whites). He also put too much exuberance and emotion in his handful of lines. No wonder RKO didn't make him a contract player after this. Onward to Paramount!
