Germans bombing New York

Such a thing wasn't possible, but I wonder if Americans feared it at the time. I read in a book on German POWs that the Nazis told their public they had done such a thing. When POWs were being transported to the American Midwest, apparently some Germans protested that they weren't being allowed to see the bombed cities.
