Freedom Man entrance

When "Freedom Man" Bing enters the stage following the "firecrackers" chorus number, he deliberately looks down and steps around something. But, a second later in a long shot, there is nothing visible on the stage. Was he alluding to a stray firecracker perhaps? Curious.
