I'm Not Surprised this wasn't a hit

I read that this movie bombed and essentially ended Shearer's career and I'm not surprised. First of all, no one wanted to see Robert Taylor as this dorky character mooning over a woman. Taylor's characters were generally debonair or rugged, but always confident, manly men, so this character did not work for him.

Second of all, if he is going to fall head over heels and make a fool of himself over a woman, it's just not believable that it would be Norma Shearer, who is 40 at the time of this movie to Taylor's 31. She is attractive for her age, but hardly a bombshell that Taylor would fall in love at first sight with, which is the whole conceit of the movie. If they had cast Hedy Lamarr or Rita Hayworth, it would have been much more believable and they would have made a more realistic couple with Robert Taylor.
