Helen's husband Sam?

is it me or does the film not explain what happened to Helen's husband Sam? He was in the beginning of the film and is seen slapping Katie. He and Helen argue about that and then the next thing we see is Helen going on tour with Katie!

Did Helen just leave Sam without any explaination or are we supposed to think that they divorced or something? Anyone?

She left him.

It mentioned earlier in the movie that she had left him once before to try to find something better, but she came back to him.

Why, I don't know. He was a brute and seemed satisfied with the pitiful existence they led.

I think the last straw for Helen was when he slapped Katie.
