Lily Emery (Gladys George)

Wow - Gladys George was the lady who played "Panama Smith" in the Cagney movie "The Roaring Twenties"!

One of my favorite movies.

Yes, that was her in "The Roaring Twenties". Her performance in "The Hard Way" was incredible! An august veteran of the stage, then in the twilight of her career, manipulated by the Ida Lupino character into a resentment filled rage to quit, thus creating an opening for the little sister to become a star. Gladys George was just amazing when she lost it just before she walks off the job!

I agree, she was amazing. The scene in the bar, where she is looking for her clipping of her favorable review in vain, is great. For a moment I thought somehow Helen had managed to steal the clipping to throw her even further off kilter, but I don't think she did, it was just lost.

The suspicious bartender was also a nice touch, slowly cleaning the glass and watching. He seemed to know what was really going on.
