The best of the series

Think most logical people would agree. Its certainly better than the original and Bride and a tad better than Son of

I would consider it to be the fourth best film in the series, after the first three.

This is by far the weakest of the Frankenstein series.

Straightedge means I'm better than you.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR SON OF FRANKENSTEIN

It lacks the intelligence, complexity, and ambitions of Whales' films.......although 'Ghost of Frankenstein' is often credited as the "dip" in quality of the franchise from A-level to B-level which I don't really get. Why is 'Son of Frankenstein' such a huge step above 'Ghost of Frankenstein?' Don't get me wrong, I enjoy 'Son of Frankenstein' just as I do 'Ghost of Frankenstein', but to me, without Whales, 'Son of Frankenstein' is clearly the film where the series becomes a clear "monster" series bent on thrills. And new management at Universal was more than happy to oblige since they needed the money. Karloff's Monster in that film has stark little characterization (when compared to the first two films) and is used as a puppet for the fantastic new addition of Ygor. Maybe Karloff's involvement elevates people's perceptions on the standing of the film, I don't know.

It's hard (and probably impossible) to keep coming up with intelligent scripts that have something to say involving the Frankenstein monster (Whales himself was hesitant about even doing 'Bride of Frankenstein) and that's why the series became more about thrills but no matter - still entertaining "camp".

Why is Son better than Ghost? It's got gorgeous set design, a devilish sense of humor, a fun cast with Karloff still in the picture...

I thought Ghost was, apart from the polished studio look, a very dull film. A massive step down from the first three films IMO.

I wouldn't say Ghost is the best, but it's still very good. In fact I enjoy it more than Son. But the 1st will always be my favorite, with Bride next. However the two House movies are also extremely entertaining also with Meets The Wolfman. So of course I love them all, with Son perhaps my least favorite. Mostly because (like Karloff) I hate the change in wardrobe. Namely the fur coat.

It's not a bad movie at all, but it's not up to par with the first three.

Frankenstein films with Boris as the Monster are just better ... Lon was a great Franky but come on --- Boris made the monster act like we love ...

My list of best to least best ( but remember I love all Movies made by universal with the Monster - Eveb when he had to share the stage with Dracula Wolfman and Abbott and Costello ---

1. Bride of Frankenstein (Boris)
2. Son of Frankenstein. (Boris) and Ygor (Bela)
3. Frankenstein. (Boris)
4. Frankenstein meets the Wolfman. (Bela)
5. Ghost of Frankenstein. (Lon) Ygor (Bela)
6. House of Frankenstein. (Glenn)
7. Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein(Glenn)
8. House of Dracula (Glenn)

In parentheses is the actor that played Furterman (the monster) I put Bela as Ygor because he stole the show and made Son of that much better ---

And all the films that had Lionel Atwill are great --- he adds so much even if a small part but in Son of ... Along with Bela turned what would have been an average offering into a TRULY CLASSIC memorable film that has inspired so many people later ...
