Ward Bond was terrific as John L Sullivan

The scene with Sullivan and Corbett in the ballroom after the fight was a classic.

No other actor could have done what Ward Bond did in this role.

Bond was fantastic here -- probably the best I've ever seen him. He certainly deserved an Academy Award nomination in the supporting category!

The scene where he gives the medal to Corbett was expertly played and an ideal of restraint.

To a new world of gods and monsters!

...of (appropriate) over-acting and then underplaying by Bond. A classic performance. Van Heflin won Best Supporting Actor for his work in Johnny Eager that year and I love Van Heflin but I would like to have seen Ward Bond get the honor, especially based on that final scene.
