Judy and Ann Sheridan

When I first truned this on and heard a female singing vocie, it sounded like that of Ann Sheridan. But it was Judy. It made me wonder if Ann's voice was dubbed when she sang and they hired Judy to do it. But Ann worked for Warner's and Judy for MGM, so I guess it's just a similar sound, although Judy's voice has a lot more personality in it.

I seriously doubt that Judy Garland would have done any dubbing for Ann Sheridan. She was too big a star in her own right to be asked to do something like that. And before she was a star, she would have been much too young to dub Ann Sheridan's singing. Anyway, something else about Judy Garland has always struck me. Watch an Alice Faye film sometime, and then one with Judy Garland. both actresses have very similar facial expressions. Makes me wonder sometimes if Judy used Alice as a kind of model for herself. It would make sense because Faye was hugely popular over at 20th right at about the time that Garland was just coming into her own.

Not to mention that Judy was with MGM throughout most of her film career, and Ann Sheridan was with Warner Brothers throughout most of that time. It's hardly likely that an MGM star - one of it's biggest, most talented, top box office draws no less - would have dubbed for a Warner Bros. B-girl.

I may be being unfair to Sheridan (whom I like, a lot) but truly...

Also, I must say, I've never seen any similarity between Ann Sheridan's dubbed voice and that of Judy Garland.

Ann Sheridan's singing voice was dubbed on occasion-- "Shine On Harvest Moon" for instance. But her own singing--a deep, smoky contralto--was heard in a number of her films, and to excellent effect.

I don't think she and Judy sounded anything alike, and Garland was always too big a star at MGM to do anybody's dubbing.

Now, Nancy Walker sounded (and behaved) a bit like the early rambunctious Judy, before she (Judy) was fully glamorized. I think that's one of the reasons Walker didn't have any musical numbers in "Girl Crazy."

And June Allyson had a certain froggy vocal style that could sound a bit Garland-ish. (One of the reasons MGM was always threatening Judy with Allyson.)

Of course nobody actually sounded like Judy. Hers was one of those once-in-a generation voices that get into your head and can't get out.
