I could have sworn that when I saw this movie years ago on TV that the Falcon faked his death at the end. I even remember a scene at the end of him getting into a cab or something while his brother waves to him. Am I dreaming? Completely insane? Both are possible.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say dreaming...or maybe just confused with some other movie.
