Was this film sponsored by tobacco companies?
Seems like the action got in the way of the actors' smoking.

shareYou ought to see 1941's "Dive Bomber." http://imdb.com/title/tt0033537/
They must have gone through a whole carton shooting one scene.
No the tobacco industry did not support this movie.
They spent all their money at Warners on making sure Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis were big starsand would never be shown without a cigarrette in their mouth. Also because of this movie the tobacco industry would give RKO $100,000 on Out Of The Past.
i take it that youve never seen the maltese falcon
shareMy God, people! MUST you insist on judging a movie that is almost 70 years old by the standards of today? Ths movie is from a time when virtually every adult smoked. So, it is only natural that the characters in this movie, and in so many movies of this era, smoked as well. I have never smoked but both my parents were chain-smokers (I don't really kn0w how I escaped the habit, but I did). And, yes, I think their constant smoking kind of got into the way of thme living their lives. Rather the opposite of aa56's post.
Cigarette companies did not need to encourage people in movies to smoke. Most of them already did.
In the '40s everybody over 12 smoked except when they were in the shower or asleep. Come to think of it, my dad had a pocket in his pajama top that always had a pack of Kents in it.
shareThank you, and amen! Conversely, people in 1942 would never have dreamed of posting nude photos of their genitalia on an internet site or on a cell phone. Different times!
shareI guess you've never seen a Bette Davis or Marlene Dietrich movie.
shareIt didn't bother me that much. I watch quite a bit of older movies and television so I'm used to seeing people smoke. These days, though, you get called out for "promoting" it if your characters smoke too much, so you have to be careful.
shareIt was funny when Alice told Oliver he'd made three bad mistakes that morning and maybe they needed a cigarette break.
