Overrated

Just kidding, I love this movie! I just figured the millennials hadn't gotten around to calling this classic "overrated," so I stepped in and did the job for them!

reply

Well I actually thought it was a bit overrated, IMDB (8.5). Don't get me wrong, atmosphere and acting was superb. There were also some clever and funny lines. But the story didn't really grab me along before the later part of the movie, when Rick was given all the power to decide what he is going to do with Lazzlo and Ilsa.

Also... Ingrid Bergman was a fine looking lady.

One of the things that I enjoyed about the movie was that it was a fictional story based on true historical background. My dad grew up in that era and knew wealthy Germans in Europe who immigrated to the US. WW II changed everything. If you were German, you were forced to support Hitler because of the concentration camps. Originally, they were set up to house political opponents of the Nazis. Soon afterward, different people were put in there like Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, criminals and the mentally ill. They showed you what goes on in those camps and people immediately became more loyal to Hitler. People were afraid of not just being bombed out of their homes, but their families put in the camps. Later, they built extermination camps. Thus, you wanted to escape if you opposed and go to a neutral country like the United States. The US remained isolationist to the troubles in Europe with The Monroe Doctrine although they vowed to go to war if the Northern hemisphere countries were attacked.

I have finally gotten around to seeing this movie, don't know why it took me so long. I thought it was great and not over rated at all. It was cool to hear all the famous lines I've been hearing for so long without having seen the movie. Bogart was amazing too!

reply

It has many often quoted lines, for sure. One of the best scripts ever written. The treatment of the piano player, by today's standards, is, admittedly, rather embarrassing. But, it reflects the time it was made in. We must always resist the urge to judge the past based on contemporary mores.

reply

Yes, most movies of that time do the same thing. I always try to look at movies for the time they were made in unless its so bad it makes it unwatchable.

reply

You don't have to be a millennial to think this movie is overrated. I honestly don't understand the love for it. I don't necessarily mind some melodrama and a cliched story, but this movie just didn't have anything to make up for it, in my opinion.

reply

Well...it was made under the old studio system-they made several dozens a year...the 'stars' had no choice under the old time system but to perform...
The music...
Anti-fascist attitude...
That bittersweet romance...
Bogie...one of the greatest hardscrabble toughies ever!
The ending scene...
I am a bit amazed that some people dont like it
No offense intended
It is brilliant and was considered a bit of a loser by the studio until it became an all time classic

reply

And one of the most amazing screenplays ever written.

reply

Yes!! Correct...
I forgot...the story was simple and as touching as any anything ive ever seen
Totally great movie

reply

What was cliche'd about this when it was originally released? I find the contemporary overuse of the word cliche has become a bit of a cliche itself!

reply

Why is it impossible for it to be clichéd at the time? Didn't melodrama exist yet or something?

Yeah sure, the word cliché is overused, just like "what", "was", "about", "this", "when", "it", "originally", "released", "I", "find", "the", "contemporary", "overuse" "of", "word", "has", "become", "a", "bit", "itself". I mean, when will people finally start making up new words?!

reply

I pity you. I would explain to you why Casablanca is one of the most universally loved movies of all time but sadly you wouldn't be able to comprehend it. No offense intended. I really do feel sorry for you.

reply

Feeling pity because someone doesn't like a movie you do like? What are you, an effin snowflake? I'm absolutely content not feeling the need to jump on the Casablanca bandwagon.

By the way, your username is dumb, you don't even know how to spell the word correctly.

reply

If I were an effin snowflake I would pity myself. Since I pity you it just means I'm compassionate.

I could explain to you why it's misspelled. It's a charming story involving a lovely Dutch friend of mine who lives in Amsterdam. It's what's known as an inside joke and sadly you're on the outside.

Speaking of names, did you choose a board game name because you're so boring?

reply

Getting upset because other people don't like the things you like is typical snowflake behavior. By the way, you didn't appreciate it either when the fanboys jumped on you when you criticized Mother!.

You and your Dutch friend clearly have a horrible sense of humor.

I was definitely bored when I chose my username, but at least it makes sense.

I agree with you, Stratego. Casablanca has some memorable lines and nails some quality ambiance at times but it is not a great movie. It is a thin, cookie cutter film cranked out among tons of other movies at the time. Not special. People loved the actors and now it is some kind of junior thespian badge of membership to say "it is amazing!!" It is simple in most every way. Not low quality but neither of a quality high enough to merit its following. Another in a long list of pretenders to the crown in movie history (Like Midnight Cowboy, Gone With the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, Virtigo etc)

reply

Yup!

reply

You'll have to ask my dad about that.

reply

I would say it's slightly overrated in that I don't think it's one of the top 3/5 American movies of all time. It is still very good and probably in the top 100 and deserves its place as a top tier classic.

reply

Nice one. I was ready to mock you fiercely.

reply

How important you are.

But seriously a better tack would be to ask why it is rated so high.
I have often wondered that myself. It is far-reaching, that is, it
is essentially a globalist movies. It is a free-wheeling, free-spirited
movie. The jerks are shown to be jerks ... ie Sydney Greenstreet.
It has a moral.

It is not preachy, it does not try to aim for certain consumer demographics,
that is always nice.

Kind of shows that while they are inhuman people, the Nazis, they will
always be human beings, even if they are conflicted, and they are
better, smarter and nicer.

And today we are in a place where the jerks have taken over.

I agree. Most millennials don't fit the stereotype. They're unfairly represented in the media.

"If the two 25 year olds in the news room dont like Applebees, there’s a screaming headline: Millenials are killing Applebees."

LOL! I agree. I don't know why so many stereotype and slam millenials, but I see it a lot.

I've never been to an Applebees either. There's not been one near anywhere I've lived.

I used to think the same, and have thought so, in general and overall.

Once I attended an event that was covered by the news, and was shocked to see all of the major news sources reported substantial facts incorrectly. It was a very rare instance in which I was there myself, and so knew what happened.

Your stories, which are more current, are even more surprising to me.
