Casablanca or Citizen Kane?

Thoughts?

Casablanca.

I’d set it down as a straight-up tie between the two films, honestly. They’re two different types of stories, and each deserves acclaim even if for very different reasons.

I enjoy both, but I think of the two 'Casablanca' has better stood the test of time. It has more action, better music, tons of classic lines, and a more relatable storyline. As much as I enjoy 'Citizen Kane', it can get a bit boring at times, which is more it showing its age than poor filmmaking, since older films pretty typically have a much slower pace than what we today expect.

'Citizen Kane', to me, is a 'watch it every couple years' type of movie, whereas 'Casablanca' I've probably watched 2 or 3 times this year already.

I agree with you, Zac. Casablanca has stood the test of time better than Citizen Kane, and that is the ultimate test in my books.

I'm more in the camp of calling it a tie, but I do prefer 'Kane' by a hair. I disagree that it hasn't stood the test of time -- it taps into the nostalgia of youth, which is among the most powerful human feelings.

Regardless, they're two of the best films to ever come out of Hollywood.

Casablanca. Kane was dull as ear wax.

Casablanca will always win out over Citizen Kane.

Wonder why the acclaimed critics think otherwise.

Citizen Kane was revolutionary, a break through....but it had no heart.
Casablanca is just an extraordinarily fine and engaging movie.....perfection within the existing dynamic.

Which one is better depends on the eye (and cinematic historical perspective) of the beholder.

No doubt in my mind which one I'd rather watch for a second or fourteenth time though.

Beautifully & succinctly put.

My thoughts exactly on how the two stack up.

jstang, very well put!

I also would have to take Casablanca over Citizen Kane. As much as I respect what Citizen Kane is, I do find it a little hard to get through sometimes, but as for Casablanca I find myself caught up in the story from start to finish. Which is why I would have to take Casablanca over Citizen Kane.

I can appreciate how visionary Welles was with 'Citizen Kane', but I don't find it anywhere near as rewatchable as 'Casablanca'.
