A Waste Of Warner Brother's Money

I wish Warner's had passed on this movie and made "Yankee Doodle Dandy" & "The Strawberry Blonde" in Technicolor instead. Black & White can be artistic and it has it's place, but it didn't enhance these two movies which cry out for color.

Cagney's character in "Captains" is similar to many he made in the 1930s & 40s; "Here Comes The Navy", "The Crowd Roars", "Devil Dogs Of The Air", "Ceiling Zero" and his best of the type, "The Fighting 69th"; a cocky, selfish guy annoys everyone, causes problems, but redeems himself at the end.

You'd think Cagney had had enough of this sort of character by 1942.

"Captains of the Clouds" is an entertaining movie, beautiful in Technicolor. "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "The Strawberry Blonde" were beautiful in perfectly appropriate black-and-white. Neither they, nor most movies, "cry out for color".
