Tyrone Power Rivals Flynn!

I'm big fan of Errol Flynn and nobody makes a better swashbuckler, but I have to say having just seen this movie, Tyrone Power makes one heck of a handsome pirate. He definitely has it going on in this movie.

Better! Tyrone Power was such a rogue in this movie. He makes Errol Flynn's more gentlemanly characters look like a pansies. Haha!

reply

Good point, I never thought of the rogue aspect. Flynn's characters always were either gentlemanly or cheeky. But never pansies!

Don't misundestand me. It's only after coming on here and looking at all the comparisons between Flynn and Power, Flynn *now* seems rather effeminate since Power is so raw and primitive in "The Black Swan."

Trying to imagine Errol Flynn pinning Olivia DeHavilland to get a kiss from her, or saying something like "I always sample a bottle of wine before I taste it. Let's have a sip," or picking up Olivia and carrying her off simply because he *thinks* she doesn't want to get married...

Nope, can't do it. Now with Bette Davis on the other hand...

reply

Agreed...so long as we are going with "rivals." Only one swashbuckler can wear the crown.

reply

And Tyrone Power wears that crown.

I have always been a Power fan over Flynn, even though I can see why some like Flynn. There's just something about Ty Power's handsome face that sends me over the moon no matter what the role.

WEll neither face "sends me over the moon" (but then that's not what I'm looking for in my male leads. For me, Flynn has a bit more panache. So I think we'll just have to agree that both are great.

I found out about Power's swashbuckling qualities when I first saw The Mark of Zorro. He totally kicked @$$ in that film. On a personal note, my late uncle and a couple of his Marine buddies were on leave and knocking around San Francisco right after WWII ended. They went in to a hotel to see about getting a place to sleep, and there were no vacancies. Marine pilot Tyrone Power happened to be walking through the lobby and let them crash in his suite for the night. My uncle said Power was a hell of a nice guy.

What nice story. Good to hear he was nice.

reply

Such a great story. Thanks for sharing that!

I really like them both and they vastly proved their talents beyond this genre of film: think of "Nightmare Alley" for Tyrone or 'Gentleman Jim' for Errol- great performances.

reply

Tyrone Power is so handsome. Flynn is great to. I like both of them. They are so different.

reply

His body was a bit soft and he was definitely holding in his stomach half the time.

reply

I was surprised at how convincing Power was as a pirate. He usually seems a tad wimpy to me in other films. I think it's great that my grandmother had the hots for Flynn, but because of that I tend to avoid his films.
