Why the extensive doubling in the final duel?

In the final duel between Tyrone Power and George Sanders, there are several moments where it is obvious that doubles were used? Why? Power was an accomplished swordsman, having ably demonstrated his skills in MARK OF ZORRO the previous year. I can understand why Sanders would be doubled ( and it may explain his ridiculous make up with bushy beard and wig) but Ty Power didn't need any help.

Anybody got any suggestions?

I suspect Power (who actually was sometimes doubled in the ZORRO fencing scenes by Albert Cavens) said, "Well, *beep* it, if George is going to be doubled in the whole damn fight, you can just do the same for me." I think that's also the reason Errol Flynn was so extensively doubled in the duel with Henry Daniell in THE SEA HAWK, as Daniell was (according to the production notes found in the printed script) an absolutely terrible fencer.

Thanks for that. I see your point and it makes perfect sense.

Pure guesswork, but maybe there was some sort of insurance / paranoia over him getting hurt issue?

There was doubling in *the* fight scene in Zorro too, but it wasn't because Power wasn't up to it - it was that the suits at the studio were scared stiff he was going to injure himself.

According to reports, they nearly had kittens when he decided he wanted to fly planes, so it would fit.
