I LOVE the eye-popping colour... there's no subtlety, but this isn't the type of movie that needed subtlety. I find many of today's movies almost too dark... there are scenes in the PoTC & HP movies that I have difficulty making out because of the overall darkness.

shareYou're used to the drab, drained colors in most of today's movies! They're horrible! Many look as if they were filmed on an overcast day; while some have that yellowish/greenish/greyish cast. Or, the screen is so dark that you can't tell what's happening, even when it's not a night scene. This is an escalating problem in films in the 21st century. I thought it was due to the overuse of CGI. Now, I think it's because the so-called cinematographers need to go back to school!
TCM is such a relief: seeing films in "glorious Technicolor" and even the earlier pastel-looking procress.
I am so happy when I happen across a film in the 2000s that has beautiful, clear color. The LOTR trilogy is a wonderful example. And, I can't fault CGI always because "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" is a feast to my eyes. "POTC" started out wonderfully, but the third one was lacking in color and clarity. However, the fourth one returned to what now seems an old-style look.
You can have that horrible look! Sadly, it has killed far too many films for me.
"The Black Swan" is lushly gorgeous! Films should assail our eyes with color! Someday, film historians will look at that washed-out, overly dark style and wonder, "What were they thinking?!"

Are you kidding? This film is a beauty! You've worn out your eyes on digital, my poor chum, if you can't appreciate that gorgeous Technicolor anymore (it actually won a well-deserved Oscar for the photo). This is cinematographic art at its finest.
