You're not the only one!

I like Jimmy very much. But I think he was wrong in this movie. He just wasn't the rough-around-the-edges kind of guy this role needed. Imagine John Garfield in his role.

I was thinking the same thing. Stewart is miscast and does his best with the part. MGM should have borrowed John Garfield from Warners.

He is definitely playing against type and even manages to snag top billing.

I did have to snicker a bit...."And now Jimmy Stewart in "Ziegfeld Girl". I like him but didn't like him very much in this role, as above....

Now that I think about it, I think that John Garfield would have been excellent in the role of Gil. Not only was he a little bit older than Lana, but he was incredibly handsome, sexy, and a great actor and you would really understand why Lana's character 'Shelia' felt the way about Gil that she did. Not taking anything away from James Stewart, because he was a great actor also and did a good job in this film, but I do think MGM should have hired John Garfield for this role. He and a young Lana would have been dynamite together.

Hmm...I wonder how Garfield would have approached this role. I've got it!...an embittered, depressed young man with a chip on his shoulder. Just like each and every role he ever did. Stewart brought something a little deeper and more interesting to the part.
