2010 Remake

What'd you guys think of the remake? I normally don't like remakes, but... HOPKINS! I dug it.

reply

I didn't think it a masterpiece by any means, but I had fun.

If you don't like my signature, go watch Transformers

reply

Hah. Well it's meant to be fun. Lots of fun, if you ask me.

Gonna pick up the Blu-Ray in a few minutes... woo!

reply

I really liked it...It was an excellent homage to all these old movies

I am vengeance. I am the night. I AM BATMAN!!!

I'm the best at what I do

I thought it was pretty bad. Don't get me wrong, it was mildly amusing in few parts but it really butchered the original film in almost every way. I give it a 4 out of 10.

Last Movies Seen:
Hell is for Heroes (1962) 8/10
Animal Crackers (1930) 8/10
Monkey Business (1931) 9/10
The Cocoanuts (1929) 5.5/10
Horse Feathers (1932) 8/10
Fury (1936) 6.5/10
Boogie Nights (1997) 9/10

I liked it. I don't know why so many people disliked it.

the father being the wolf (And the fight at the end) was pretty much a homage to the old Universal movies like Frankenstein Vs the Werewolf or stuff like that.
I saw it as trying to pay tribute since back then they used to do stuff like that sometimes. (combining different monsters into the same movie, making characters from older movies change in sequels)

I never had a problem with the father being the werewolf because it fits the story the remake was trying to tell. It ties everything together and in my opinion it was much better to have the father be the wolf than some random stranger.

If they made the wolf into someone else, it would be too make characters and too many plots going on (Since we would have had no see who this other person was)
I think for the original it worked very well to have the wolf be the fortune teller, but for the remake it was perfectly done with the father .

I loved it! It was fun and I loved the look of the werewolf.

I didn't like it, sure Del Toro was good, the transformation scene was enjoyable. But the original has such a charm and attractiveness that to me made the remake seem boring despite the effort.

Beware the moon, lads.

I hated it. I wanted to like it, but I just can't stomach CG effects. Some pepole love them. I think they look cartoonish and fake. Who would have dreamed back in 1981 when Rick Baker was breaking ground with the effects in American Werewolf in London that 30 years later, his genius would be rendered useless by computer graphics? It's such a shame.

reply

Im going to play devil's advocate here and I DO hate CGI (I hated the Thing prequel for example)

but in the case of the Wolfman remake I have to give them a pass because of all the problems the movie was having. They had some budget problems at one point, they had to change directors and Universal kept cutting the movie and messing it up. (they even changed the soundtrack to a techno-rock version to be more like Underworld, THANK god they ended up using the original score)

SO... with all these problems the movie had, it is a miracle that it came out as well as it did. They used CGI for time and for money, but to give them credit they gave Benicio Del Toro a Real costume, so the transformation scenes might be CGI, but the wolf was real,

And i looked AMAZING, so as a hater of CGI myself, I have to give the remake a pass. I still love it.

Just saw the original Wolf Man on TNT and found it far superior to Del Toro's interpretation.

While Del Toro was credible and conveyed a bit of sadness, it was difficult to understand why the remake/reboot or whatever had to change the setting of the film- the original was set in 1941-the year of its release whereas the 2010 version was moved to the century before!.

Sometimes things are better left not shown in detail. The transformation of Chaney was far more believable because it was subtly done- and the rationale was more of a individual who might be suffering from paranoid delusions and his father wanting very much to protect his son.

The remake was ruined for me by the over the top acting of Hopkins and the unnecessary focus on him during the later stages of the film.

I really liked it, but one of the huge reasons I adore the original film was the relationship between Lawrence and his father. Claude Raines is one of my favorite actors (with my favorite role of his being the corrupt Renault in Casablanca) and the drama and tragedy that plays out between the three leads in the climax was the reason it is considered by myself to be the greatest of the original Universal films. Unfortunately, the remake made the awful decision to completely *beep* up the relationship between Lawrence and his dad.

reply

Overall while it was flawed and could have been better, I thought the remake was pretty good.

reply

I thought the remake was a good movie to a degree. Benicio Del Toro gave a really good tortured performance. Most of my qualms with the movie have to deal with Anthony Hopkins' performance, the place the plot went and the CGI.

It was another one of those movies that suffered from (probable) meddling at the studio level. Half of it was a success as a moody, atmospheric gothic horror thriller that really worked as a throwback to the old Universal films without becoming cheesy. And then that ending...oh, that terrible, terrible CGI-action fest that didn't fit with the tone of the movie at all.

reply

I was a fan of the originals from age 10 on up, and I considered the 2010 remake as adequate, but inferior to the original. I showed it to my movie group and it didn't go over well at all.

Life, every now and then, behaves as though it had seen too many bad movies

reply

Compared to the original, the remake sucked. It was so inferior it was a joke. The remake was horrible in so many ways. See the original. Forget the remake.

I find the opposite for me, Out of all the Universal classics, I find the original wolfman a little bit slow at first and boring (before he becomes the wolfman)

The remake for me fixed a lot of that, the story makes more sense with the woman being the fiancee of the brother as well, I always hated the telescope scene of the original

reply

I liked the cast, set design and to an extent the effects but I thought the ending let it down far too cheesy and too much CGI.

reply

I have to ask, did you find "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman" cheesy as well? because to me that was a clear homage to movies like that, where you had monsters fight each other.

I dont know, for me it was like seeing what would one of those fights from the classic movies look like with modern effects
