What do you think of the three 'Whistling' movies?

Red Skelton starred in a series of three "Whistling" movies. They are:

Whistling in the Dark (1941)

Whistling in Dixie (1942)

Whistling in Brooklyn (1943)

Which do you think is the best? Which the weakest? What did you rate these films?

Note that the first film is an adaptation of a 1932 Broadway play, which had already been made into a movie. See Whistling in the Dark (1933).

I thought they were pretty good. What might have helped was the fact that I had not heard of them, had no preconceived opinion, nor had heard any hype from "Whistling Film" lovers....

"Whistling in the Dark" was the best IMO (Conrad Veidt was great in this IMO) and had 'better rolls and characters' that were not repeated in the others.

"Brooklyn" comes in second.....so....

You will have to guess at third place I guess....

I rate very high always, so I think I gave the original an 8.

So what do youy think of 'em???? A bunch of us had this discussion on one of the other "Whistling" Boards (nice people too) and I forgot to come back and answer your question....

I just re-watched them the other day, the type of movie which entertains me anyway. Am glad ol' Red didn't get as 'silly' as I believe he got later in show biz in these. Just the right amount. Since "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" have been a Ann Rutherford fan/etc. Conrad Veidt tended to 'blend in' too much in Casablanca, it was great to see him in this role....

I'm ashamed to say I haven't seen them! I made DVD copies of some VHS tapes, but I haven't watched them yet. I posted this thinking I would have gotten around to it by the time someone replied--but I haven't.

I do that on a constant basis....I did tape "Duel in the Sun" (seriously) and any number of films lately, but can't find 'em when I want them....

"loved the line 'we part in radiant contentment"!"

You and I do seem to have this 'parting in radiant contentment' routine down pat on these boards, but not for too long it seems ....

As above "Casablanca" and "Whistling in the Dark" are the only two movies I have seen Conrad Veidt in, and will have to visit his page to see what might be coming up of his. TCM did a mini-bio on him the other month, and it seems he had a most fascinating life not to mention a brilliant career, most of which I have missed....

xylonian: Conrad Veidt also had a career in the silents and made his mark in the German "expressionist" film, "The Cabinet of Dr Caligari." Hunt it down on YouTube, if finding a DvD copy proves elusive--it's one of the all-time greats in motion picture history!
