What a stylish movie!

I must have seen it before but I don't remember it but I am dazzled anew by MGM gloss. This movie is a high watermark of how classy MGM was. Every costume was a showpiece and lit and photographed to show it to it's best advantage. The sets and everything in them sparkled. Shiney surfaces had never been so smooth or reflective. The house built from a converted mill was terrific. Was there a story? I was on the phone when I tuned in and watched the first 20 minutes with the sound off. It was still very compelling.

This films airs often during a run of Crawford's films like tonight. The basic story is Joan's character (Mary) is an author is having an affair with her publisher Herbert Marshall (Rogers Woodruff). She considers Robert Taylor (Jimmie} her good friend but he loves her. He thinks she'sthrowing her life away with the relationship. Knowing she plans a romantic weekend at friend Bridget's remodeled farmhouse Jimmie pretends to get lost and brings a woman to the house to sort of make Mary jealous-but the woman is actually the publisher's wife, Greer Garson (Claire) which Jimmie is aware of.

Jimmy also leaves a fake message for the publisher keeping him in town for awhile. In the meantime a thunderstorm comes up and the hostess invites Jimmie & Claire to stay the night along with her other guests. The woman bond during a discussion of Mary's book about a married man in love with another woman. Ultimetly the wife realizes Mary's lover is her husband when Mary says his name. Then Rogers shows up and Claire realizes what Jimmy did and tells her husband Mary had no idea who she was. Mary also realizes the person she's been disrespecting is a very nice person that she likes. Claire also likes her.

This film is a remake of a 1933 film with the same title which starred Myrna Loy in the Joan Crawford role.

That converted farmhouse was absolutely gorgeous. I'd love to have a weekend house furnished that way. I also thought the ladies costumes were fabulous. They stand the test of time. I could see myself wearing Garson's outfit she had on at the house. I'm not a fan of the hats Joan wore though.
