Filming started in 1936

Apparently the filming of this movie started in 1936 and finished around mid 1941. George Cukor showed initial rushes of the movie to Thalberg, who died in 1936. If true, this would indeed be not Garbo's last piece of professional work, but just last released movie. She did not sign up for any movie after Ninotchka.

probably not true at all... filming began on 18 JUN 1941, and the production ran into several problems:

According top IMDB, exterior ski sequences were filmed in the Sierra Nevada range near Reno, Nevada and Norden, California. IMDB also gives filming dates entirely within the summer of 1941. Even in the best of snow years, they wouldn't have had the coverage seen in the movie during summer months. Those scenes had to have been filmed between late autumn and early spring.
