A fun movie

I just love "Topper Returns". Roland Young is so cute and clueless, Joan Blondell is my kind of gal. Funny and sassy. Everyone does a great job on this movie. I actually like this movie better than the original "Topper". One of my all time fun favorites!

Quit smoking whatever it is...this movie is terrible and far below the original and its sequel. LAME LAME LAME. This is American Cheese at its worst and most over-processed. A 2/10 at best. Original is maybe a 7 or 8 and sequel (Topper Takes a Trip) is about a 5/10.

Bflogal is not smoking anything. You were just in a bad mood when you saw it.

Believe me, I'd be among the first to sign a petition banning all further sequels and remakes, but this was made before the time that "sequel" automatically meant "sucks". The only thing I have to quibble with is the half-a$$ed conclusion. The rest of it takes the original concept into more screwball territory, but it works thanks to the charm of the actors and the pacing of the direction. 6/10, IMO.

I would never give it a 2--that rating is for crap like Boat Trip or Fear dot Com.

Maybe I was in a bad mood because I'd just seen 2 good films immediately before it (Topper and Topper Takes a Trip) and expected a 3rd, but was punished by sitting through this garbage. I can only hope the tv series was better than the 3rd film. It plays like a bad Scooby Doo mystery (pre-Scooby Doo) with lame jokes and contrivances abound. The 3rd film took the series from good screwball comedy to just plain screwy, not to mention unfunny. Try watching My Man Godfrey to see great screwball comedy.

Godfrey is definitely a classic. So it depends on how you look at it. Sure, this sucks compared to MMG; but compared to the plethora of sequels and remakes that have befouled the big screen lately, it's not so bad IMO. I wouldn't have paid to see it, though, that's for sure.

I agree. I love this film and watched it before Topper which I personally found boring in comparison. It's a brilliant silly film and encouraged me to pillage my parent's collection of classics ranging from the afore mentioned Godfrey to Will Hayes and I'm still looking for more. Maybe because I saw Topper Returns first it became my favourite, who knows.

I just bought the criteron edition of 'My Man Godfrey". I had a cheap copy and liked the movie so well, I wanted to own a cleaned up version. Money well spent!

Hi there,
I have to agree that of the three I seem to like this one the best. I seem to recall seeing this one first one summer while visiting the states as a child. Later I saw the other two. I would say I would rate them as Topper Returns, then... Topper Takes A Trip and then... Topper. That summer I saw quite a few films, something I did not get to do at home, tv watching was a rarity. Many of these were from the 30ยดs and 40ยดs, ie. classics, A films and there was a load of B films too. This is where I found and grew to love all those Universal Horror films and other films from this genre. I found the films I liked more, featured what I would later learn to be filled with character actors. They just seem to have something going for them.

I liked this movie as a child, it was funny.

Years ago, before her death, my Mom and I watched this movie and we laughed ourselves silly. Joan Blondell was wonderful, a brilliant comedic actress, and Ronald Young and Billie Burke are just terrific!

I love this movie. Have watched it many times and it never gets old. One of my favorite lines: "Scheezophrenia, nothing!"

"Yeah, but it's a DRY heat!" (Aliens, 1986)

I like the look on Joan Blondell's face when she says, "I'm not Miss Carrington. She is!"

reply

This movie was wonderful, a hoot from start to finish. Stand-outs for me were Billie Burke, Eddie Anderson and Donald MacBride. Haven't laughed so much for ages.

reply

You are right not only is to my opinion the best of the 3 movies but also one of the finest and funniest movies i've ever seen, too bad they don't make these movies anymore!

I just watched Topper Returns(1941). It was the most enjoyable 90 minutes I ever spent in front of a TV and DVD player. I got the DVD mega cheap for just $5; there's three more movies on it!

I saw a movie on AMC one Christmas Eve when I was a small child, but fell asleep and never got to see the rest.

What I remember of the plot is this: a young blonde woman comes to stay at what I think is a hotel. That night, a dark figure comes into her room through a balcony or an open window and strangles her to death. Now she's a ghost and two older men (they were either drunks or maybe they were just the comic relief?) staying at the hotel are the only ones who can see her and she persuades them to help her figure out who killed her and stop them.

Later on I think we find out that she was mistaken for another blonde and that's why she was killed.
I remember the villain was dressed in a dark cape and I think he wore a top hat.

I remember the movie being a strange blend of comedy and scary and mystery and it was in black and white.

Could "Topper Returns" be the movie I'm looking for?

reply

Sounds like the right one to me! It's a great film and will be airing on TCM in January along with the other two. Topper Returns is the best one, imo.

reply

I have to agree with most members on this board.Topper Returns is without a doubt the best film in the Topper series. The other two Topper films just don't compare.
Joan Blondell,Carole Landis and Eddie Rochester stick in my mind the most.

I remember first seeing this movie on TV when I was a child in the 1970s.Then in 1980,my teacher ,whom I've mentioned before in the Way Out West discussion board, showed the original Topper movie and Topper Returns on reel to reel film.

Currently I own both aforementioned films on DVD.They both came in the same DVD package. The latter film is a joy to watch to this day.

reply

No, it's not the same movie, although that sounds similar. In Topper Returns they are at a big house, not a hotel. The murder victim doesn't have blonde hair. Topper is at his own house down the road. And the murder victim in this was stabbed instead of strangled.

LOve the original Topper, was all set to enjoy this one, noticed the great cast, although sad that Constance Bennett was not back, but still.

I then watched it and was underwhelmed. I gave it a six. It just was not that funny, and while Joan Blondell was a very good actress, with several great perforamances to her credit, including many comedies, she was not as good as constance Bennett here.

I showed it to my movie group tonight and they loved it. I should mention my group consists of senior citizens 62 and up, mostly female. Anyway, even Rochester got laughs from the group. As for me, I quite enjoyed it, remembering vaguely having seen it in 1941 at the tender age of eight. I especially enjoyed George Zucco who in my mind is one of the underrated creepy character actors.

that guy seemed pretty casual and calm for just having been in a car accident contrasting the two women, his driver looked funny in that coat and the prints in the snow really gave an "invisible man" vibe, good thing the leading lady wasn't invisible, this had some neat special effects for a movie of this age, what great photography this movie has, just that shot of the car driving up to the castle, at first reading the plot i didn't know if this was a horror, comedy or what. it felt a lot like a chick flick though. check out those stairs, hehe, is that for humans.
