What is WITH the Dood character? Hyperactive, abusive, and downright insane.

WHY were Elly Mae and the turnip-wielding hayseed groveling in the dirt while in rut (him for her, her for his turnips)?

It just goes on and on and gets more strange. When I saw John Ford's name on this I almost choked. What kind of glitch in the fabric of time and space could have made the studio system produce an artifact of absurdity like this...this...THING?
