Beverly Hillbillies

Was the television program Beverly Hillbillies based at least in part on the book/movie Tobacco Road? Note the names of the characters: Elly Mae, Granny.

I remember thinking the same thing. There are too many similarities between the Clampett and Lester families. But I've never heard it officially said that one was the inspiration for the other.

Come to think of it, there are similarities between Ma and Pa Kettle in the movies, and The Real McCoys on TV, with the Lesters as well.

I think somewhere, on some level, TOBACCO ROAD created a view of of the post Civil War-era South that exists to this day. I guess having one of the longest runs on Broadway --- and elsewhere --- will do that.

Jed Clampett had a Lincolnesque dignity. No one in Tobacco Road had dignity except for Dana Andrews character. Even the banker had more dignity than those poor trashy people.

I noticed that both families have an Elly Mae. But the Elly Mae in 'Beverly Hillbillies is a tomboy and animal lover. She's nothing like the Elly Mae in this. Also the two grannies are different.
