Why isn't George Romney mentioned in this movie about his muse? It was Romney's many beautiful portraits of Emma that made her famous and won her the attention of Lord Hamilton.
God is subtle, but He is not malicious. (Albert Einstein)
well actually, Emma was sent to live with Lord Hamilton by her lover, and his nephew, Charles Greville. He sent Emma to stay with him as Sir William's mistress when Greville was getting married, he had intended to come and fetch her after the honeymoon. He was embarassed by being known as her lover after all her popularity and needed to marry a wealty wife because it himself was broke. Imagine his surprise when Hamilton married her!
You can see many of Romney's paintings of Lady Hamilton at the Frick Museum in New York City.
By the way, in the film it is clear that Lady Hamilton and the Queen of Naples were close friends. The Queen had a sister who was also a queen, Marie Antoinette, Queen of France and Lady Hamilton was asked to visit her and carry a message on one of her trips across Europe that went thru Paris. This was after Antoinette was under arrest I think.
I HAVE seen this painting in the Frick, and ftr I highly recommend any visitors to New York to visit the Frick. It's not only a great collection, but you have he opportunity to see the collection in one of the few surviving Fifth Avenue mansions. It's a great setting for the collection.
