Will Smith to star in remake.

Latino Review says that a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1941 mystery-thriller is in the works. The original film is about a shy young English woman (Joan Fontaine) who marries a charming gentleman Cary Grant, but then begins to suspect him of trying to kill her. The site says that Will Smith is in talks to produce and star in the Cary Grant part.

Thoughts? So it's only rumors and it comes from one source, Latino News. It would be tangible if Smith and his cronies were doing something inspired from the movie. While The Truth About Charlie was not a Hitchcock remake, it's right up next to the 1998 Psycho. I am doubtful Smith can pull this off.

I thought it was funny how the article felt it necessary to point out that Smith would be in the Grant part, as opposed to the Fontaine part. But then I thought it might be interesting if there were a gender switch in a remake.

Has Smith ever played a creepy bad guy type before? I think he's often accused of just playing the lovable charismatic hero too often.

I'm doubtful Will Smith can pull anything off. That was rather harsh, but I just am am not a fan of his. I did not mind him on TV, but then he made the leap into films and ended up an A-List actor...for what? Sometimes I think they they just need another A-List black actor (besides Denzel Washington). Maybe that was rather harsh too, but I like Denzel...it's just Will Smith that I don't.

ANYWAY...I just saw this movie last night and I loved it. I really hope it isn't remade. I don't want any of the classics I've seen so far to be remade even though they probably have already been remade or they will eventually be remade.

I don't want to see anyone as Johnnie except Cary Grant.

Well, agreed, but I actually like the idea of Will Smith in this role (if it absolutely had to be remade).

Will has a similar thing to Cary going on - the eternal 'good-guy' and he has a great deal of personal charm to boot.

I could totally buy him playing something a little ambiguous, a little like his role in Six Degrees of Seperation. He was great in that role - you never really knew who that character was.

The key element is that you (as the audience) should be in the same position as that of Lina - i.e. wanting Johnny to be honourable. That takes an actor who has charisma and charm - but who is also capable of pulling a switch - something Cary was capable of and Will would be also.

This movie was remade, with Anthony Andrews and Jane Curtin, of all people, and it was terrible. Anthony Andrews was a very good actor, but no Cary Grant. Curtin was laughable.
