He ended up with Liv. The ghost captured her and then Lucky realized he loved her all along. The 'ghost' turned out not to be Eggerton, but the guy who was in the iron lung (sorry, I can't remember his character's name). You'll recall he was engaged to Elinor before any of the unlucky fiances, but his version of the story ended there. When he is captured and found out not to be 'crippled' after all, he finishes the story: Elinor rejected him because he was now a cripple. So when he got better, he swore no one would ever marry her!
You should try to find it again on TCM. You missed a lot of revolving secret doors and spooky hallways. A good flick.
