Me likee chinee new yeah

I have tried to watch this several times and finally got through it beginning to end just now on Amazon prime. Up to this time my favorite Von Sternberg film has been Shanghai Express but this seems an even more stylized personal vision. I'm going to take a few minutes, read some stuff and watch it again.
I can understand not liking this film. There are barriers to entry that any cultured viewer would find difficult,even preposterous. I advise anyone to stick through the entire first casino scene then decide if their in for the full ride. This can be enjoyed for the sets, costumes,portraiture,blank verse or nostalgic glamour.
I'm just disappointed in myself for not 'seeing' this sooner.
