There was the scene after the big battle where the soldiers were marching and the story of what Sargent York did was slowly being exagerated. Was the soldier that turned and said "half the German army and a general" Ernest Borgnine? I don't see him as an uncredited cast member.

I'm pretty sure that was Ray Teal, whom you might remember as Sheriff Roy Coffee from Bonanza.

Ernest Borgnine joined the Navy right after high school, so he would've been on a ship somewhere at this time.
