George Sanders was horribly miscast

I suppose they thought in casting they would cast against type and have George be the emotional, lovelorn romantic hero and Robert Montgomery be the psycho husband. (well, he did play a psycho in Night Must Fall, and very well). Poor old George, his is a voice that should be dripping with nasty sarcasm, his is a face that should show a cutting sneer of superiority, and he has to pitch all that away and act like a heartfelt schoolboy.

I agree....the actors should have been allowed to switch roles.
Mr Sanders would have relished that part.

WOW! I just saw this movie yesterday and thought the EXACT same thing. I've seen films where Sanders is the bad guy and when I read the movie summary on TCM, I thought Sanders WOULD definitely be the baddie. The fact that the two seemed playing against type ruined this movie for me. That and the fact that the movie was so contrived and the really quick and sappy final scene. I think this movie had potential, but it was way overdone to the point that it was just silly.

They wrapped up the end of this movie like the studio was on fire : )
