*** SPOILER follows ... shouldn't they have kept the diary to show to the governor when they returned? they must have been very trusting to just take her word for it that such a notebook existed...

This scene is a jump forward in time and George Sanders is OUT of jail at this point in the film. They obviously had already shown the diary to governor... otherwise how would he be free and setting sail on a cruise ship with Ingrid?

Yeah, but if they had kept the diary their children could have sold it on E-Bay and made enough to send them to college!!

In the interests of the science of psychiatry, they should have saved the notebook. The personal thoughts of someone that psychotic would help doctors treat this mental illness.
