Disraeli's Background

Several of the reviewer's have commented on the fact that this film makes NO mention whatsoever of the fact that Disraeli was from a Jewish background.Well, let's take a look at that. For one thing, this was a wartime propoganda film, and the focus was on his rise to political fame. The Jewish origins wouldn't have been been germane. Two,considering what was going on in Europe,it wouldn't have been wise to bring in this rather extraneous fact.Third,Disraeli had never been a practicing Jew;he converted to the Anglican form of Christianity as a young man, long before the story opens.Fourth, while the English upper classes are often slightly anti-Semitic,it was NEVER the racist form practiced in Europe-after a Jew converted to Christianity, his origins weren't held against him.His "sins," as it were, were expunged by Baptism. So,his Sephardic Jewish origins were seen as merely an exotic quirk more than anything else.
