Cuban sequence

The Cuban musical sequence, when Molly McCorkle dressed as a man, singing from a male persepective, and dancing with women, was so obviously homosexual. Did audiences not pick up on that when this came out? Amazing how society has changed, but people haven't.

i wouldn't really call it homosexual. It's not unheard of for a female to play a man's role onstage, think of "Peter Pan." I myself have played Oliver Twist in "Oliver!" in high school. It's usually if they need to cast somebody older for a character who's meant to be a young boy, but the purpose in this seems to be for some musical and or dance purpose.

If you get a chance, you should check out "Morocco" (1930), with Gary Cooper & Marlene Dietrich. Dietrich does a great number in a man's suit. You might find some similarities between it and Goodard's number from this later film. (Also, Morocco is a great film ;-)

yeah..Ive just watched this film for the first time recently and yes thats the natural thought that came to my mind when i saw her in the suit..might have been Paulettes portrayal or something deeper that made me think of it like that ..i dont know..but on the other hand ..it doesnt mean im right.. the intentions probably werent to make her seem homosexual but probably more so as just playing a mans role/character for entertainment or story purposes!

..Whoa she still looked beautiful! =]

Don't forget the lyrics to that song... "He's disarming, alarming, charming and... GAY." ;)

FYI...back in that film/cultural era...the term 'Gay' did not suggest homosexuality!

All Shakespeare's characters were performed by male actors. That was before women were allowed to act. We've come a long way baby since the day of the Baird!
