Originally Mr V in the US?

In 'TV Companion Book to Films' it mentions an alternative title for the US market for this movie. On original release it is supposed to have been called 'Mr V.' I can't find mention of this on imdb so is this true information? Also would that V in the title refer to V for Victory? Or would it stand for Venus of which Pimpernel Smith was so fond?
