Where did the title come from?

The song "Penny Serenade" was released in 1939 by Guy Lombardo and his orchestra. But the song doesn't appear anywhere in the film, nor does the film story match up with the lyrics to that popular tune. Is there another source for the title?

I wondered the same thing. I have no idea. When I saw the movie the first time I assumed the little girl's name was Penny...nope.

Well, the lyrics do certainly portend that tragedy of the movie; and it was a popular song of its day.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For that night so divine she was mine, no word had been spoken
When I woke from my dream she was gone, my poor heart was broken
Still I pray that wherever she may be she will remember
In her heart she will always hear my Penny Serenade
Si, si, si, hear my love song for a penny
Si, si, si, just a Penny Serenade
Good call, giverny98. I think you're right. But it still seems a stretch.
Didn't she work in a record shop before they married? I'd always assumed that was the reason why it was called Penny Serenade. If I remember correctly records were a prominent theme in the movie as well.
Marvolo? What's that - a washing detergent?
