Yikes!!

Yikes! They put the baby asleep on her stomach!

I was thinking the same thing... they didn't know better back then.

Last films seen....Revolutionary Road - 9/10, Valkyrie - 8/10, Gran Torino - 9/10

Unfortunatly in them times the risks of SIDS wasn't very well known and sleeping a baby on their stomach was very widley practised. Now a days we place babies to sleep on their backs with their feet at the foot of their cots, which is the 'way' to reduse cot death, altough it is still around like in them days as cot death still has no know cause.

I think they done it so they baby doesn't get a flat head, my daughter has just outgrown her flat head, and has also out grown sleeping on her back. I normally find her face first in her cot. She is 1 years old.

The problem with my life is...it's not a musical

reply

From what I was told by my mother (I'm 43 now) babies were placed on their stomachs to prevent them from choking to death should they...uh....regurgitate their dinner during their nap.

A most excellent movie none the less.

reply

yeah thats why my mum laid both my sister and i on our stomaches.

basically there is arguments for laying the baby either way.

My children were both born in the 80's and they always slept on their stomachs. At that time, everyone I knew put their babies to sleep that way.

reply

Yep, that was the recommendation in the 1980's, I remember doing that too.

reply

I placed both of my children on the sides, supported with a rolled blanket to minimize the flat head. They slept in our room for the longest time, because of SIDS. In fact, I woke my son up one time, I just couldn't be sure...
Me too, but I rotated my kids. Right side, left side, tummy. At that time it was believed that a lot of SIDS was by a baby choking to death from lying on their backs. And I know what you mean about waking up your son. I remember the first time my eldest didn't wake up for his 2a.m. feeding. I was so sure he was dead that I was completely paralyzed. It was 5 minutes before I could force myself to go and check. It was the longest 5 minutes of my life. Do you remember hearing about "Smother Love"? Babies who slept in their parents' beds and were accidentally smothered by their mothers. When you are a first time parent, every rumor terrifies you. No cats in my house when they were babies, either!

reply

When Irene put the baby in the bed between her and Cary I was concerned that Cary would roll over onto the baby. I guess I knew the baby was going to die. I just didn't know when. I'm psychic, you know.

reply

That remark about cats you made at the end of your statement is another old-fashioned stereotype. The notion of them "stealing a baby's breath" is preposterous. The cat arrived first; the kids later. My kids loved the cat and he was very protective of them.

My first son was born in '91. I was told to lay him on his stomach so he wouldn't choke.

But, 13 years later, I laid my daughter on her back. I always worried that she might choke, if she spit up.

reply

I gave birth in the 70's,the 80's and the 90's. No one said anything till the 90's when we were told to lay the baby on it's side with a rolled receiving blanket behind it's back so it couldn't roll into full back position. Of course,we sleep with all the babies in between the two of us so they could always be in earshot and seen. No-we never rolled over. We sleep with a 7 lb. dog now and we don't roll over on her either.
