Turned off

By Lupino's indifference to her father's plight, involving a boyfriend she, seems right at home with.Especially irking was telling the gangster, of what her father gave her, what a turn coat. The mother should of been told what was going on as well.

Absolutely but the film is about people with conflicting values. She wanted something more exciting out of life.

I was also put off with the idea of 2 guys in their 40s referring to themselves as "two old men".

reply

Lol, back in 1941, two guys in their 40s were "old men".

HeywoodJablomy I was just looking at this and yes 40 years olds were considered old back then. And they looked old too. Ever see Andy Hardy's father, he looks like he is around 70 but I am sure is probably in his 40 or early 50's.

reply

John Garfiend had a line "You're lucky if you make it to 70". Back then, in the early days of Social Security, people weren't expected to make it to 65 or much past it.

Lewis Stone was fifty-seven to sixty-six during the years he played Judge Hardy. You're right--he looked like he was in his seventies. I remember my grandmother when she was in her early sixties, in the 1950s--she was an old lady. My wife is now in her mid sixties and as I write this post she is down at the beach surfing. Sixty today is the thirty-five of the '40s and '50s. In those days most adults had been smoking since their mid teens, and the only people who continued to exercise after their high school or boot camp years were professional athletes.
