Were the titular characters in The Mechanical Monsters the first known instance of robots that transform into something else?


While not literally Transformers and they don't transform into planes, they do transform into an alternate form that enables them to fly home to headquarters.


So, I have to wonder. Was this cartoon, released in 1941, the first known instance of robots that transformed into something else?
