Song *I'm a wittle wabbit in the day time....*

Haven't been able to determine where the song [Whiteside sang] originated and it's making me crazy. Anyone have the answer? Sounds very Elmer Fudd-ish.

"I'm just a wittle wabbit in the day time
I'm just a wittle wabbit in the Spring
I'm just a wittle wabbit in the rain time........."

The character of Sheridan Whiteside was based on the great writer and radio host Alexander Woolcott. According to his friend Harpo Marx in his book "Harpo Speaks" Woolcott would dance around and sing that song as an obnoxious way of bragging when they were playing croquet and he had made a great shot. Kaufman and Hart, who wrote "The Man Who Came to Dinner" were a part of that illustrious crowd. Hope this helps.

"I told you a million times not to talk to me when I'm doing my lashes"!

I'm trying to determine if it was an actual song w/lyrics. I realize Woolcott danced around singing it. Just didn't know if it's something he made up whimisically or if an actual song to that effect was ever written. Thank you for responding

Marx should've whacked him over the head with a croquet mallet.

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

PS. Isn't that line at the bottom of your post from Jean Harlow and Dinner at Eight?

I thought what he sang was "I Hunt Wabbits in the Springtime; I Hunt Wabbits in the Fall...," which would be a parody of the Cole Porter tune "I Love Paris."

Unfortunately for my theory, that song wasn't published until 11 years later for the musical "Can-Can." On the other hand, it may have been used by some band singers, just not in wide release? Certainly nobody loves Paris in the Springtime when there is a division of Panzer tanks along the Champs Elisées.

Considering that Monty Woolley was a close friend of Cole Porter's, he could have snuck it in as a gag, even if the song wasn't known.

Interestingly there is this Bugs cartoon

The Wabbit Who Came To Supper.

Where Bugs sings "I'm just an angel in disguise."

So some double entendre's going on here.... though i may be mysusing the word.
