Mary Wickes, a 'pro' from the beginning

Her first major film role ... a small part, excellent performance, wonderful expressions, launching a long, funny career -- very, very well done !

I agree ...... they don't make performers like Mary Wickes anymore. When she's on screen it's like seeing an old friend.

YES! If you hang around TCM long enough you start to see her again and again, every role a supporting, but indispensable, one, perfectly played. I hope one day that TCM gives her her due, maybe not on the cover of their monthly magazine but as a featured inside story or one full night of her movies on TV.

Love Mary Wickes!!! Even later in her career like Sister Act; certainly a strong and hilarious performance!

And Little Women as Aunt March... She was awesome in everything she did!

I love Mary Wickes, but in this role she hadn't really found her screen persona yet. I kept waiting for her to go all Mary on Whiteside (like her role in White Christmas), but she was so subdued.

She originated her character in the Broadway play which was the basis for this movie, much as Wooley originated Whiteside. The play ran for 739 performances on Broadway. Surely after that many performances she had a pretty good handle on the part.
