Brigid wasn't that attractive

at least not to me

I agree. Mary Astor was never a beauty and she was 35 by the time she played Brigid. Nice clothes but her features aren't very good. There a lot of femme fatale beauties who would have looked better.

I agree

"and she was 35 by the time she played Brigid."

Oh, the humanity! I'm sure they had a wheelchair ready for her off camera so she could collapse and have a nap.

reply

Ha, indeed. 35 isn't that old.

Though by Hollywood standards perhaps the standard producer of the era would've felt like she had already aged out of the role. It probably helped her that Bogart always looked older than his years.

reply

I think she was.

I agree.

She was a beautiful woman in a terribly unflattering haircut, and FYI Mary Astor had a reputation as a massive slut after an ugly divorce in the mid-thirties made her interesting diaries public. So 1940s audiences may have thought of her as extremely sexy, in a way that hasn't carried over the years.

It really is a pity about that haircut. It makes her look hard and old, at an age when she could still look beautiful and sensual.

reply

Knowing a girl has slut tendencies would only turn me off, but maybe some dudes would find that sexy in some way.

In any case, I thought she was attractive but not overly attractive. She was not, for instance, a Veronica Lake. But she was attractive enough for the role.

reply

Yeah, I definitely would not have lost even a nickle trying to help her, much less being knocked out, held at gunpoint, etc.
