John Halliday, usually the "dirty old man", cast against type in this one as butler/Cotten's dad, acquits himself admirably.

Agreed! I just watched this on TCM. He and Edna May Oliver are the movie's only 2 reasons for being. Other cast members were workmanlike - and Cotten was better than that - but this script really tied their hands.
