A Little Thin on Plot, But Enjoyable

I've watched all the Thin Man movies as well as I Love You Again. This is my least favorite movie of the group, so far. Don't get me wrong, it was still fun to watch, but I don't think it measured up to the others. The second half of the movie kind of dragged down the first.

William Powell and Myrna Loy play Steven and Susan Ireland who are celebrating their 4th wedding anniversary. A series of mishaps leads to speculation by Susan that Steven cheated on her with his ex. She decides to divorce him. On advice from his lawyer, Steven pretends to be crazy in order to prevent the judge granting the divorce. From here the story goes from one slapstick situation to another with Steven ultimately dressed in drag.

Up until the point where Steven is committed to the hospital, the movie is pretty funny. For me, at this point, the movie kind of changes tone and loses its way. Its still pretty funny as many of the pratfalls and misunderstandings are silly, but it felt like an entirely different film. The reason for their divorce seemed oddly innocuous (although hell hath no fury) and the reason for making up seemed pretty dumb.

There is the still the issue of the ending. Do they, indeed, run off to Canada? How do they resolve the assault charge against Steven? Does everything get resolved and he is released from custody? It kind of left us hanging.

The supporting cast is great. Jack Carson as "Willoughby, Ward Willoughby" is a pretty funny character. When he is doing "archery exercises" outside the hospital fence, that just cracked me up. Even a throw rug plays a supporting role and is a funny sight gag throughout the film.

My memory foam pillow says it can't remember my face. I can tell its lying.
